Summary
The second annual Transdisciplinary Academic Conference for Emerging Scholars (TRACES 2026) brought together ambitious undergraduate researchers to explore innovative knowledge beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries. Organized entirely of students, by students, and for students at the University of Hong Kong, this year's conference emphasized the vital ability to cross intellectual borders and find solutions in a rapidly changing world. Centered on three key emerging themes—Stories and Symbols, Identity and Institution, and Governance and Growth—the event fostered dynamic discussions through scholarly presentations and intellectual exchange.
A major highlight of the conference was the pair of distinguished keynote presentations delivered by leading scholars:
-
Prof. Carmen Lee (The Chinese University of Hong Kong) delivered the first keynote address, titled "Researching the Digital World: Language, Ethics, and the Researcher as Insider," which explored the evolving ethical considerations and challenges of conducting linguistic and communication research within digital media and AI environments.
-
Dr. Klaus Colanero (The Chinese University of Hong Kong) presented the second keynote, titled "How I discovered transdisciplinarity and developed the Nature-Knowledge-Values framework," introducing a unique transdisciplinary analytical framework designed to examine complex, multi-faceted problems cutting across scientific, philosophical, and pedagogical boundaries.
In addition to these scholarly addresses, more than twenty undergraduate researchers from a growing global network stretching from Hong Kong to South Africa, and the UK to Russia, showcased transdisciplinary projects. Their work exemplified diverse methodologies and collaborative problem-solving, empowering student scholarship and making emerging voices heard on a global stage.
This gallery captures the core of that discovery.
